It’s been seven years now, starting with the first battlebot I worked on with Mark Bradford. After that it was a free standing trebuchet that was built for Guinness world records. We tossed a refrigerator 314ft 8 inches. We built snow sleds, art cars, piles of gadgets, and did a reality T.V. show. The work I did under Mark was the hardest I ever did. I recommend it highly.
After working with Mark I built the Racing lizard. There had been some competition between another artist and me about driving a radical art car (one that is almost pure sculpture) for long distances. He was aiming at Washington D.C., I was aiming at Reno Nevada for Burningman. Thus the racing Lizard was born.

I left Houston on the lizard on August 15th, two days later than I had planned. The first ride that I had taken on the freeway was absolutely terrifying. The lizard is twitchy, temperamental and dangerous. Riding on the freeway next to a big rig you get the feeling that it is trying to suck you under. With the lizard you get all the hazards the come with a VW Beetle combined with the hazards of a motorcycle. You can’t drive it without the police looking at you HARD. I got pulled over 10 times between Houston and Nevada. Almost got arrested Three of those times. -Willam T Burge |
